Vote FOR Prop A and unlock money Seguin ISD desperately needs, with zero impact to our local tax rate.

On November 3, Seguin ISD voters will decide on a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE). A vote FOR Prop A does NOT increase the total tax rate, but it does mean more money for our schools – here’s how:

Prop A shifts 2 cents within the district tax rate from debt service to maintenance and operations, and generates $2.4 million to support teachers and students – including $1.5 million from the state.

Just like at home, costs have increased for SISD dramatically but state funding per student is not keeping up. Prop A helps address this shortfall, unlocking $2.4 million, with more than 60 percent of that coming from matching dollars from the state.

It’s the only way to unlock desperately needed operations money for our district!

A VATRE (Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election) is a Texas local election in which school districts ask voters to approve a higher Maintenance & Operations (M&O) tax rate to generate additional revenue.

It funds daily operations, such as teacher salaries, security, and academic and extracurricular programs. It does not create new debt, unlike school bonds, and cannot be used to build new structures.

Even though there is no increase to the total tax rate, anytime a district sets its M&O rate higher than a state-set automatic limit, a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) is triggered. It’s a quirk of state law!

A vote FOR Prop A gives our schools about $2.4 million more for safety, staff and student programs — and the total tax rate stays exactly the same at $1.0828 per $100 of value.

If this passes Seguin ISD will bring in an additional $2.4 million in local and state funds.

The money will be used for critical and foundational district needs:

  • Fund safety and security at each campus
  • Continue critical student programs
  • Recruit and retain qualified educators (teachers and staff)
  • Support district operations

How does this impact me as a…

Stronger Schools, Stronger Students

Seguin ISD’s student population has grown by more than 177% in the last six years. A vote FOR Prop A enables the district to shift money where it’s needed most:

  • Maintain Fine Arts, Athletics, CTE programs, and Special Education
  • Recruit & retain talented teachers and staff
  • Provide for safe & secure campuses

Recruit & Reward High Quality Teachers and Staff

Without a rate increase, cuts will need to be made to teachers, counselors, nurses, librarians, special education personnel, and other support staff. Prop A will protect these essential positions.

  • Maintain student/teacher ratios for the best classroom experience
  • Provide competitive compensation for our teachers
  • Support safe, secure campuses

Stronger Schools, Zero Total Tax Increase

Strong schools have a direct impact on the economic health and quality of life of our community. A vote FOR Prop A unlocks much-needed funding while keeping our total tax rate flat.

  • SISD is one of Seguin’s largest and most important employers
  • Strong schools help build a strong workforce
  • Strong schools have a positive impact on the value of our homes & businesses

Stronger Community, Zero Total Tax Increase

State law freezes school district property taxes for homeowners 65+ at their dollar amount from the year they qualified. This vote cannot raise that frozen amount, regardless of rate changes

  • No tax rate impact for seniors, disabled persons
  • Strong schools to continue to support local economy and home values
